Q

What kinds of programs are offered at OHC Language Center?

A

The Language Center’s general goal is help those who are interested in improving overall language proficiency, especially Oral Communication. We provide you with a personalized general or intensive program to help you achieve your goals. We also prepare students for job interviews, work presentations and exams. Class times are flexible. Your aims are discussed with the Academic Advisor before booking the one-to-one English lessons and we do a detailed analysis in order to create a bespoke program. The program is regularly reviewed and all materials and homework are chosen to suit your needs.

Q

Why one-to-one training is better than group training?

A

Many learners decide that they need a one to one class and then seek out a teacher, organize materials, schedule times, and agree cost independently.

  • The learner is often highly motivated to learn.
  • The learner has the undivided attention of the teacher. This means more opportunity to engage in real communication, more feedback and better understanding of the learner’s needs.
  • The learner has more opportunities to use the teacher as a resource – to ask questions, to see models of language, and to practice skills.
  • The learner can develop a real and productive relationship with the teacher.
  • The learner’s needs can be addressed more fully because there is more flexibility in timing and structure.
  • The teacher may feel pressurized to achieve results because of a greater degree of responsibility.

Q

What are your strengths as a one-to-one language trainer?

A

Wanted to speak with a North American but have never had the chance? Here is your opportunity! Each of the teachers at OHC Center is a native Canadian, and has been trained in the Canadian Language Benchmarks® (CLB) teaching system.  They will share a few of strategies and tips with you to develop a natural North American accent.

This is the most personal and flexible course available. This one-to-one course is tailored according to your requirements, whether it is general English or English for specific purposes. Your teacher will carry out a thorough needs analysis and use materials that will enhance the English language skills and confidence you need on any specific aspects that need strengthening.

Your teacher will find a range of methods for giving feedback to you. They can for example use immediate feedback when you are speaking, or a hot sheet, or just keep data for another class. Spend time working on errors – you are a great opportunity to make substantial improvements.

When our students reach a certain level, many of them is eager and excited to start talking (especially young adults). The more they learn, the more they want to learn. To assist student with these new training requirements, OhHoly Center has assembled several resources and made them all available for our student. This includes free Online Course Materials from other ESL Research Institute, free online training tutorials from CCLB (The Centre for Canadian Language Bench), and free videos from IOCW (Institute OpenCourseWare) for do-it-yourself learners.

Q

I think the most difficult thing in one-to-one lessons for me is the PRICE. Can I study in small group so that I can share tuition with my friends?

A

Yes, Two-to-one, or three-to-one tuition is available to students studying together. At the same time in a group you can split the price (schools will then charge a small administrative fee). The students should be of approximately the same level and have the similar aims & requirements. Our teacher will do their best to help all of our students attain their full potential, but the result isn’t guaranteed in group study. We would kindly like to remind you that in addition to group tuition, one-to-one tuition focuses on the student’s strengths and weaknesses and increases the overall level of confidence. Individual English training ensures you improve your English skills quickly.

Q

What do teachers currently do to communicate with students who don't speak English well? How can you improve on the current status quo?

A

We focus on individual needs. While Student A may be struggling with learning the alphabet and initial sounds, Student B might be reading at a fourth-grade level. Our teaching mantra is, "All learners can learn if we but know how to teach them." With the current educational journals consumed with such topics as Differentiated Education, it is important that our teachers focus on each student, choose those skills that are the most important for him or her, and tailor our instruction accordingly.

In addition, if you think our stuffs can be of any further assistance to help facilitate your communication with the teachers, feel free to ask them for help. However, using the stuffs as translators should be the last resort, as the most important thing to remember is that our students need to be speaking English as much as possible. The more you practice, the better you speak. The better you speak, the more confidence you will gain. And this cycle will continue to build fluency.

Q

Can I order my personal course?

A

We also offer private lessons in which you can decide exactly what you want to learn. Lessons can cover General English (for example extra Pronunciation and Speaking practice), but also specific work-related topics for example preparing for a specific meeting.

This type of tuition is particularly where students have very particular needs or when participants wish to learn very intensively. Although the school keeps comprehensive and up-to-date resource material participants are encouraged to provide their own material to make the course more relevant to their own needs. Activities outside the school building in connection with participant's specific interest can be organized.

Q

What means “THE RESULT IS GUARANTEED”?

A

To support teaching and learning excellence and to meet accreditation requirements, all OHC language programs have been asked to formulate expected learning outcomes. Learning outcomes are statements of what students will be able to do as graduates of a particular course/program of study. Expected Learning Outcomes may be written at the course descriptions.

Graduates of our programs will be able to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. The long-term concern is to help the students learn enough English that they can function successfully in the mainstream without ESL support.

  • You will become more fluent and accurate when using the English language;
  • You will be able to communicate with native and non-native speakers in English in a variety of different contexts;
  • You will acquire improved English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking);
  • You will build up your vocabulary further, improve your pronunciation and have an increased understanding of English grammar;
  • You will be more confident and independent both as a learner and as a user of the language;
  • You will make new friends from all over the world.

A

Q

Why do some students progress more quickly than others?

A

Progressing in OHC Center depends on your academic ability, motivation, attendance and participation, and the amount of practice you do INSIDE and OUTSIDE of the OHC classroom.

Q

Even I attended English classes at the other language school, why still I can’t understand native English speakers, and they don't know what I am saying?

A

That is, outside the classroom, for English speakers who are not ELS professionals are not so considerate toward non-native speakers. They will continue at their normal pace and expect everyone to keep up. English speakers speak quickly. They use reductions, linking, and expressions that you didn’t learn in the classroom.

It’s time for language teachers to teach English in a way that is best going to serve our students in life, and not treat language as a purely academic exercise. OHC programs focus on student’s personal needs and objectives, Increase confidence and fluency in speaking and listening in a range of everyday situations both socially and at work. The emphasis is on improving confidence in speaking and listening in a range of everyday situations that the students face outside the classroom. This method helps to build success for all learners.

Q

What is your CLB English Assessment?

A

Whatever you are our students or not, you can determine your proficiency level in English by taking our free Online CLB English Test. We provide an online self-assessment tool for people who are interested in assessing their English as a Second Language (ESL). These tests are based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and will assess your language proficiency.

Q

What do the CLB assessment results mean?

A

The assessment benchmarks indicate what a learner can do in English environment. Benchmarks that are high usually indicate high English receptive skill levels. Benchmark results may be different for each of the receptive skills.
